The play explores the dehumanizing effects of the military and the medical establishment on a young man.
Often interpreted as a tragedy of the working class or laboring poor, Woyzeck also presents, from another perspective, "the long tragedy of envy and resentment rooted in human nature."
The play is partially based on the real-life story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a wigmaker from Leipzig who later became a soldier. In 1821, driven by jealousy, he murdered the woman he was living with and was publicly executed by beheading.
